Thirteen nations traveled to Montevideo. The World Cup was born. Uruguay, the first champions, beat Argentina 4–2 in front of 68,000 in a stadium they had built in eight months.

Pelé, Jairzinho, Carlos Alberto. Brazil's 1970 side scored 19 goals in 6 matches and won every game. The final — a 4–1 demolition of Italy — is still the standard by which World Cup football is measured.

Paul Gascoigne cried when he received a yellow card in the semi-final, knowing he'd miss the final if England got there. England didn't get there. But the image did.

Andrés Escobar

He scored an own goal against the United States on June 22. Colombia were eliminated. Ten days later, Andrés Escobar was shot dead outside a nightclub in Medellín. He was 27.

The Penalty

Roberto Baggio, the best player in the tournament, stood at the penalty spot in the final. Rose Bowl, Pasadena, full sunshine. He put it over the bar. Brazil won their fourth title. Baggio stood alone in the center circle.

The Seizure

Hours before the World Cup Final, Ronaldo suffered convulsions in his hotel room. He was taken off the team sheet. Then he was put back on. Brazil lost 3–0 to France. Nobody has ever fully explained what happened.

Zinedine Zidane, who had barely scored with his head in four seasons at Juventus, rose twice at the near post in the World Cup Final. Two headers. Two goals. A nation held its breath and never let go.
