The Beginning

Thirteen nations traveled to Montevideo. The World Cup was born. Uruguay, the first champions, beat Argentina 4โ€“2 in front of 68,000 in a stadium they had built in eight months.

They Think It's All Over

Geoff Hurst's third goal in the final either crossed the line or it didn't. England won their only World Cup. The argument has lasted sixty years.

Pelรฉ, Jairzinho, Carlos Alberto. Brazil's 1970 side scored 19 goals in 6 matches and won every game. The final โ€” a 4โ€“1 demolition of Italy โ€” is still the standard by which World Cup football is measured.

Confetti and Controversy

Argentina won their first World Cup at home. The confetti fell like snow. The military junta watched from the stands. Not everything about 1978 was football.

Tardelli's Scream

Italy's Marco Tardelli scored in the final and ran screaming toward the bench, fists pumping, face contorted with something beyond joy. It is the most famous celebration in the sport's history.

The Hand of God

Two goals in five minutes against England at the Azteca. The first was cheating. The second was the greatest goal ever scored. Diego Maradona did both.

Roberto Baggio, the best player in the tournament, stood at the penalty spot in the final. Rose Bowl, Pasadena, full sunshine. He put it over the bar. Brazil won their fourth title. Baggio stood alone in the center circle.

The Panenka

Zidane chipped the goalkeeper in the final against Italy. A Panenka penalty, in a World Cup Final, in the 7th minute. It is the most audacious act in the sport's biggest game.
