A side’s points in its last eight league matches under the coach in charge now (fewer for a coach who hasn’t had eight, never his predecessor’s), against the points the betting market expected before each match: three for its chance of winning, one for the draw, from the bookmakers’ last pre-match price with their margin taken out. Six of the eight need a price; the list runs from the furthest below a match. It measures results against expectation; it doesn’t forecast anyone’s job.

How the Manager Index rates a coach

GoalPost rates a manager from 1 to 10 in every match it covers live: mostly on the result against what was expected of his side, then on his in-game changes, his side’s set pieces, the goals it conceded against the chances it allowed, his squad use and its discipline. A typical match rates about 6.5, and the best coaches average about 8. The Manager Index, out of 100, is seven tenths that rating and three tenths his points a game, because points alone reward the richest clubs. A coach has an early read from five rated matches, and needs 10 to stand among the leaders. A post is the club or nation he is in charge of now: a nation as GoalPost’s research of the federations’ appointments has it (the nation pages’ source), a club from the coaching records we receive, checked against the clubs’ team sheets.
