Espanyol dismissed coach Manolo González on Tuesday night, hours after a 4–3 extra-time defeat at Sestao River in the first round of the Copa del Rey. Sestao play in Segunda Federación, Spain's fourth tier.

Marcos Fernández put Espanyol ahead from the penalty spot in the sixth minute. Adri Carrión and Andoni Ugarte turned it around before halftime, and Roberto Fernández forced extra time with a late penalty. Gabriel Moscardo put Espanyol back in front, Ander Laka leveled two minutes later, and Jon Rojo won it for Sestao in the 121st minute.

Espanyol are in the LaLiga relegation zone. Reserve-team coach Sergio García led first-team training on Wednesday, and the club has not said who will take Friday's league match at Villarreal, EFE reports.
