FC Augsburg had more of the ball, but it went nowhere cleanly enough to protect them. Michael Gregoritsch put them ahead in the 18th minute, turning in Arijon Ibrahimović’s pass, and for long stretches that was the shape of it: Augsburg circulating play, Freiburg waiting, and neither side finding much in the way of clear chances. Then Freiburg’s bench changed the match — Igor Matanović equalized in the 65th minute from Yannik Engelhardt’s assist, and Cyriaque Kalou Irié finished the turnaround in the 85th, set up by Vincenzo Grifo. Gregoritsch still earned player of the match, but Freiburg got the two goals that mattered and left Augsburg with possession and little else.
